This work of George Segal’s is the plaster sculpture of his Depression Breadline that he cast and additioned into bronze sculptures.  To our knowledge it hadn’t been installed since it was in his studio.  When it was asked to be installed I was given dimensions for the size of a platform and was left to design the rest.  Being given no installation notes, I was left to my own devices to find a way to install the work and built that into my design of the platform.  I design and built this platform with a framed support system as a means of securing the wall of the pieces.  This means that the work was installed 5’ off of the museum wall, so we could work behind the piece.  The façade on the platform reveals two spots for pallet jacks, once the wall is complete the pallet jacks move the piece into place, so that the people can be installed.

The design of the support system for the plaster sculpture. Frames for the door and the wall were built separately to ensure support throughout the piece.
The support was anchored to the wall after being moved into final placement for extra security.
