Craftivism: Activism Through Craft brings together three installations, It's Nice to Meet Me and Exodus, by artist and activist Shannon Downey, and Badass HERstory, by members of Bad Ass Cross Stitch. Founded by Downey, Bad Ass Cross Stitch is a global community project that inspires women and gender non-binary folks to share their stories through the art of cross stitch and embroidery.
It's Nice to Meet Me consists of 266 embroidered hoops that were installed in a grid throughout the main gallery. Exodus is a letter of defection from the Catholic Church embroidered on a funeral pall. The casework was designed and fabricated specifically for the piece, inspired by the shape of a coffin. Badass HERstory consists of 133 textile pieces installed on hanging wire in the hallway and staircase leading to the main gallery.
